About Us

We Live in a Beautiful Area of Undisturbed Woodlands

The Western Cross Timbers of Texas is a picturesque post-oak woodland of rolling hills, north and west of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  It has been left relatively undeveloped and undisturbed since settlement first arrived in the mid-to-late 1800’s.  In recent years, it has been discovered by retiring and relocating urban dwellers, attracted by its more-natural, less-altered beauty, and its quiet, rural character.  Land prices in the area have more than tripled over the past five years, as a steady stream of relatively affluent buyers purchased old farmsteads and constructed their country retirement homes.

Threatened by an Industrial Wind Project Shrouded in Secrecy

In April 2006, FPL Energy LLC ( Florida Power & Light) invited selected landowners to a meeting to discuss their upcoming Wolf Ridge Wind Energy Center, a project of some 100 massive industrial wind turbines they intended to build in eastern Montague and western Cooke counties.  The local newspaper editor attempted to attend the meeting, and was refused.  The Press was not welcome, nor was the public.

This was the first outward hint of a land-leasing effort that had apparently been underway in secret for a year or more.  No announcement had been made, no hearings had been held, no permits or studies were required.  Leasing landowners were required to sign non-disclosure agreements to keep the activity secret from everyone but their attorneys.

Shock and Dismay Turns into a Search for Truth

Shocked and alarmed on learning of the damage caused by these projects in other parts of the country, and the opposition they have aroused, residents began to organize to educate themselves and others as to the nature of the project, and its possible impacts.  Is wind energy a good thing?  Does it really work?  Will it replace our fossil fuel or nuclear plants?  Is it something that is worth the destruction of our property, its value, and the quality of our lives?  As they researched and studied they found to their amazement that the answer to each of these questions was a resounding “No!”  The questions then became - Who is behind it?  Why are they doing it?  Why here?  In a low-wind, scenic area?  The answers were disturbing and frightening, not just for residents of the Cross Timbers, but for all Texans.
